As you would ride a bicycle in the very first time, we recommend you to read about the components of your bicycle now. One such component is road crankset which is critical to the performance and operating efficiency of your bike.

Definition of a Road Crankset

Alternatively simply called as the crank, a road crankset on a bicycle is that part of the bicycle that enables the connection of the pedals to the drivetrain of the bicycle unit. It comprises of two parts cranks arms which forms the entirety of the crankset as well as the chainrings. In simple terms, the crankset is responsible for the forward motion of a bicycle as a result of the energy transfer to the chain and the back wheel of the bike.

Importance of Road Crankset

Power Transfer: In order for the rider to remain in contact with the bike, the crankset is a primary component that connects the body to the unit. From the perspective of the rider, a quality engineered crankset promotes good power transfer efficiency which in turn leads to greater speeds being achieved in the ride.

Gear Ratio: It is apparent to see the unit of crankset will affect its design and therefore the crankset’s design will influence its respective gear ratio which will affect how easy or hard it will be to pedal under varying conditions. For instance a higher gear ratio would be ideal for speed while a lower gear ratio would be more appropriate in hills climbing situations.

Rider's Comfort: The rider's crank arm length as well as the size of the chainring can also affect the rider's comfort and efficiency significantly. The aid of proper crankset may limit the fatigue levels and improve the overall experience while cycling.

Types of Road Cranksets

Compact Cranksets: Compact cranksets generally have lower gearing which makes them perfect for climbing steep hills as they consist of small chainrings making it easier to pedal during an uphill. This is quite ideal for recreational cyclists and such cyclists who ride often in hilly areas.

Standard Cranksets: These cranksets tend to have larger chainrings that create higher gear ratios which would be efficient for flat terrains and speed. Competitive cyclists who want to ride for a long distance without wasting energy on the peddling tend to favour standard cranksets.

Single Cranksets: The term itself implies that single chainring is used for single crankset. This type of crankset is mostly in use in track bikes or fixed gear bikes which are easy to handle and lightweight.

Electronic Cranksets: These are rather advanced cranksets in the market as they have electronic shifting systems and are thus able to change gears swiftly and easily. These are best for cyclists who are serious about their work since they are quite technologically based.

The road crankset proves to be an important system of every bicycle which affects and determines performance, comfort and efficiency. Having enough information about its function and the different types of cranksets available can enable cyclists to select those that will help them keep enjoying their range of motion and riding experience. Such components are characteristics of all bicycle users regardless of whether one rides for recreational purposes or as a competitive sport, choosing the correct crankset makes every trip worth it.
