What is crankset Q-factor?

Q-factor also known as Crankset Q-Factor is a measurement of the separation distance between the pedal and the frame rail. This distance is measured between the center point of the pedal and the point of the crank axle which determines the angle of pedal rotation and position of the cyclist on the bike quite directly. A larger Q-fator suggests that the thighs of the cyclist are likely to be far apart which is normal for robust thigh muscle riders or for pigeon toe riders. On the other hand, a smaller Q-factor means that the legs are placed closer to the midline of the body furthermore this is ideal for cyclists who have a larger comfort range in terms of pedaling.

Factors affecting Q-factor

Q-factor is not only related to the width of the pedal clearance but also to several other factors. To begin with, the demand for the Q-factor may also vary according to the design and the installation technique employed on the crankset. For instance, crank arms that are long almost always increase the Q-factor, however short cranks do allow for a more narrow Q-factor.
